Experiences & Workshops

Learning traditional Hon-Kintsugi is not simply learning a technique. It is learning a different pace of work.

Natural urushi lacquer cannot be hurried. Between each stage are periods of waiting, observation, and preparation. Students quickly discover that the final gold or silver is only the last gesture. The practice itself is found in the layers beneath.

Ma-Kōbō offers two ways to encounter the practice: a shorter Kintsugi Experience and a full-day Workshop. Both are intentionally limited in size and use vessels prepared at different stages of repair, allowing participants to work directly with traditional materials while respecting the curing time natural urushi requires.

Kintsugi Experience

Previously offered as the Kintsugi Workshop

A focused introduction to traditional Hon-Kintsugi, designed for those who are curious about the practice and would like to experience a few essential stages firsthand.

Participants work with prepared vessels through two stages of the process, including joining and final finishing techniques.

All materials and vessels are provided.

Kintsugi Workshop

A new, full-day offering for those who would like more time to explore the practice in greater depth.

A deeper, full-day introduction to the materials, techniques, and rhythm of traditional Hon-Kintsugi.

Participants work with vessels prepared at several stages of repair, moving through three significant phases of the process with time for demonstration, questions, and individual guidance.

All vessels and materials are provided.

A complete Japanese Kintsugi kit may be purchased separately for those who would like to continue the practice at home.

Kintsugi Experiences and Workshops are intentionally small to allow time for demonstration, questions, and individual guidance.

They are offered selectively throughout the year as the rhythm of the studio allows.

If you would like to be notified when the next offering is scheduled, or are interested in arranging a private Experience or Workshop, I would be pleased to hear from you.
